About this course

Level 3 Assessing Competence in the Work Environment Course. Study online, at your own pace, from anywhere in the UK or overseas. The course typically takes three to six months to complete. You'll learn how to plan and carry out assessments of vocational competence in the workplace, using methods such as observation, oral questioning, and recognition of prior learning. You need to be working in a learning or assessing role to enrol. The City and Guilds level 3 assessing competence in the work environment qualification is a recognised route into assessor roles across education, training, and apprenticeships.

Who this course is for

This qualification is part of the training, assessment and quality assurance (TAQA) suite of courses. It is ideal if you are a practitioner who assesses the demonstration of competence in a work environment by using methods such as observation. Examining work products, oral questioning and discussion, use of others (e.g. witnesses), learner statements and Recognition of Prior Learning (RLP).

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but a basic competency in English and maths will be necessary and it is expected that all assessors and quality assurance individuals have occupational competence in the areas that they are assessing in.

You will also need to be working in an accredited, or non-accredited learning role.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn the principles and practices of assessment in vocational and workplace settings.
  • You'll plan and carry out competence-based assessments in the work environment.
  • You'll use a range of assessment methods, including observation, oral questioning, and work product review.
  • You'll gather and evaluate evidence from witness statements and learner declarations.
  • You'll apply Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as part of the assessment process.
  • You'll give structured feedback to learners on their performance and progress.
  • You'll record and document assessment decisions accurately and consistently.

How you will learn

You study online with tutor support throughout. Learning is self-paced, so you work through the material at times that suit you. Assessment is based on a portfolio of evidence drawn from your real assessor practice. This includes observation records, assessment plans, feedback logs, and written reflections. Your tutor reviews your work and provides regular progress feedback. You must be actively working in a learning or assessing role to generate the evidence required.

What you will need to bring

The College of Animal Welfare will confirm anything you need before you start. You will need access to a workplace where you are assessing learners, as the qualification requires you to generate evidence from real practice. A basic level of competency in English and maths is expected, and you must have occupational competence in the area you are assessing.
