About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English in Pickering. Classes run at Atmosphere Centre for Young People. Sessions are part-time and daytime, making them manageable alongside other commitments. To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand simple everyday texts, such as signs, labels, and short messages.
  • You'll write simple words and sentences for everyday purposes.
  • You'll listen to and follow short spoken instructions.
  • You'll speak clearly enough to be understood in familiar situations.
  • You'll recognise letters of the alphabet and understand how they form words.
  • You'll build confidence using English in practical, everyday contexts.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Atmosphere Centre for Young People, with a tutor guiding each session. Learning is hands-on and practical, using everyday texts and real tasks. Assessment is through tasks set by City and Guilds, covering reading, writing, speaking, and listening. There are no formal written exams at this level. Your tutor will support you through each assessment task.
