About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English course in Scarborough. Classes run at Scarborough Adult Learning and Skills Service, part-time during the day, so you can fit study around other commitments. Over 18 weeks, you'll build your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at Entry Level 1. To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

  • You'll write simple sentences with basic punctuation.
  • You'll spell common everyday words.
  • You'll listen and respond in straightforward conversations.
  • You'll speak clearly enough to be understood in familiar situations.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Scarborough Adult Learning and Skills Service, with a tutor guiding each session. Assessment is through tasks that reflect everyday reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You'll be assessed on each skill area separately. There is no written exam in the traditional sense; tasks are practical and based on real-life contexts.
