About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English in Pickering. Evening classes run at Atmosphere Centre for Young People, so you can fit study around work or other commitments. The course runs for 18 weeks part-time and covers reading, writing, and speaking and listening at Entry Level 1. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm this is the right starting point for you. This free functional skills english course for adults is open to those aged 19 and over who don't yet hold an Entry Level 1 English qualification.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand short, familiar texts
  • You'll write simple words and sentences to communicate basic information
  • You'll listen and respond in straightforward conversations
  • You'll use basic punctuation and spelling in your writing
  • You'll follow simple spoken and written instructions

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Atmosphere Centre for Young People during evening sessions. Assessment is through tasks set by City and Guilds, covering reading, writing, and speaking and listening. You'll complete written tasks and a speaking and listening activity to demonstrate what you've learned. Your tutor will track your progress throughout the course.
