Entry requirements

A pre-requisite to gaining entry onto the HNC is to have a relevant level 3 qualification in engineering OR relevant work experience in the engineering. For those who have not studied up to level 3 in Maths, it is strongly recommended that you consider adding on the Bridging Maths course, learners may be required to complete a bridging course(s) before gaining entry onto an HNC/D. Age requirement: the minimum age requirement for this course is 18.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop knowledge of manufacturing processes and production systems.
  • You'll study engineering mathematics and applied science at higher education level.
  • You'll explore quality management and continuous improvement methods.
  • You'll examine materials science and their application in manufacturing contexts.
  • You'll analyse engineering project management principles and practice.
  • You'll apply health, safety, and sustainability principles to manufacturing environments.

How you will learn

You'll study online, working through course materials at your own pace. Assessment is through assignments and project-based work rather than traditional exams. This is typical of Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications, which assess you through coursework submitted throughout the course. You'll receive feedback on your work as you progress.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Unicourse will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Manufacturing engineer: design and improve production processes
  • Production manager: oversee manufacturing operations and output
  • Quality assurance engineer: maintain product and process standards
  • Process improvement engineer: identify and reduce inefficiencies
  • Manufacturing technologist: develop and apply new production methods
  • Operations supervisor: manage teams and workflows on the factory floor
  • Engineering project coordinator: plan and deliver engineering projects

What you could study next

  • BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering: a Level 6 degree top-up, typically one year full-time, is the natural next step after this HND. Many universities accept this qualification for direct entry into the final year.
  • Chartered Engineer status (via IMechE or IET): professional registration for engineers who want formal recognition of their expertise and experience.
