About this course

Level 5 BTEC HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Study online. You can complete this Pearson Edexcel qualification in around one year, studying at your own pace without attending a campus. The course covers the second year of higher education in engineering and sits at the same level as the second year of a university degree. It gives you a direct route into the final year of an engineering degree. To join, you'll need a relevant Level 3 engineering qualification or relevant work experience.

Who this course is for

BTEC Higher Nationals are internationally recognised higher education qualifications at levels 4 and 5 that are equivalent to the first and second years of a university degree. They provide learners with an affordable, vocational route to completing a degree, upskilling or employment. These courses are fully accredited by Pearson. This course is the ideal choice for you if: You want an affordable, fast-track, and guaranteed route towards the third and final year of an Engineering degree-related BA/BSc degree, do not have the time to go to college or university, and, therefore. You currently work in an Engineering sector and want to upskill and progress in your role.

You will work on the following units:

Entry requirements

A pre-requisite to gaining entry onto the HNC is to have a relevant level 3 qualification in engineering OR relevant work experience in the engineering. For those who have not studied up to level 3 in Maths, it is strongly recommended that you consider adding on the Bridging Maths course, learners may be required to complete a bridging course(s) before gaining entry onto an HNC/D. Age requirement: the minimum age requirement for this course is 18.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop knowledge of electrical circuit theory and analysis.
  • You'll study electronic systems and their practical applications.
  • You'll explore engineering mathematics at higher education level.
  • You'll examine power systems and electrical machines.
  • You'll develop skills in engineering project management and professional practice.
  • You'll apply principles of digital and analogue electronics.
  • You'll build understanding of health, safety, and sustainability in engineering contexts.

How you will learn

This is an online course delivered through self-paced study. Assessment is assignment-based, as is standard for Pearson Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals. You'll complete written assignments and project work that are marked and graded. There are no formal written exams. You study in your own time, which means you can fit learning around work or other commitments.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Unicourse will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Electrical engineer. Design and maintain electrical systems and infrastructure.
  • Electronics engineer. Develop electronic components and systems for industry.
  • Control systems engineer. Work on automated and process control systems.
  • Electrical design engineer. Produce technical drawings and specifications.
  • Systems integration engineer. Connect and test complex engineering systems.
  • Instrumentation engineer. Measure and control industrial processes.
  • Graduate engineer. Entry-level engineering role across sectors.

What you could study next

  • BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This HND gives you direct entry into the final year of a related degree programme at many UK universities, completing your full honours degree in one further year.
