About this course

Level 5 HND Mechanical Engineering Course. Study online at your own pace, fitting your learning around work and other commitments. The course typically takes one year. It covers the second year of a higher education engineering programme and is designed as a direct route into the final year of an engineering degree. You'll need a relevant Level 3 engineering qualification or relevant work experience to enrol. If your maths hasn't been studied to Level 3, a bridging maths course is strongly recommended before you start. The minimum age for entry is 18.

Who this course is for

BTEC Higher Nationals are internationally recognised higher education qualifications at levels 4 and 5 that are equivalent to the first and second years of a university degree. They provide learners with an affordable, vocational route to completing a degree, upskilling or employment. These courses are fully accredited by Pearson. This course is the ideal choice for you if:You want an affordable, fast-track, and guaranteed route towards the third and final year of an Engineering degree-related BA/BSc degree You are employed, do not have the time to go to college or university, and, therefore, need a more flexible route up the ladder. You currently work in an Engineering sector and want to upskill and progress in your role.

Entry requirements

A pre-requisite to gaining entry onto the HNC is to have a relevant level 3 qualification in engineering OR relevant work experience in the engineering. For those who have not studied up to level 3 in Maths, it is strongly recommended that you consider adding on the Bridging Maths course, learners may be required to complete a bridging course(s) before gaining entry onto an HNC/D. Age requirement: the minimum age requirement for this course is 18.

What you will learn

  • You'll apply engineering principles to mechanical systems and components.
  • You'll analyse thermodynamic and fluid mechanics concepts used in engineering practice.
  • You'll develop skills in engineering mathematics and data analysis.
  • You'll study materials science and manufacturing processes.
  • You'll explore mechanical design and computer-aided design (CAD) techniques.
  • You'll examine project management and professional engineering practice.
  • You'll build knowledge of electrical and electronic principles as they apply to mechanical systems.

How you will learn

This is an online course delivered through a virtual learning environment. You study at your own pace and complete assignments, projects, and written assessments throughout the programme. Assessment is primarily coursework-based, with units assessed through assignments marked against Pearson Edexcel criteria. There are no formal written exams for most units. You submit work digitally and receive feedback from tutors online.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Unicourse will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Mechanical engineer: design and develop mechanical systems and components.
