About this course

Level 5 HND Mechanical Engineering in Leicester. Classes run at Leicester College Abbey Park Campus, full-time over one year. This Pearson Edexcel level 5 hnd mechanical engineering course builds on Level 4 study, covering advanced mechanical principles, thermofluids, manufacturing systems, virtual engineering, and lean manufacturing. You'll also develop further mathematics and engineering management skills through applied projects and practical work. Entry requires a Level 4 qualification in a related subject, such as an HNC in Engineering, plus GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above (or equivalent).

Who this course is for

This is a two-year, part-time programme. In year one, you will study for the Higher National Certificate (HNC) and then complete the Higher National Diploma (HND) in year two. This course offers pathways in both mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering. This level 4/5 course is designed to enable engineers within full-time employment to continue their studies at a higher level whilst maintaining a career path.

You will be studying over one full day plus one evening per week. This course currently runs on Monday evening, 6pm to 9pm, and all day Tuesday, 9am to 5pm although this may be subject to change.

What you will learn

  • You'll apply advanced mechanical principles to engineering problems.
  • You'll study thermofluids and their role in mechanical systems.
  • You'll analyse manufacturing systems engineering and modern production methods.
  • You'll explore virtual engineering tools used in industry.
  • You'll apply lean manufacturing techniques to improve efficiency.
  • You'll develop further mathematics skills for engineering analysis.
  • You'll build professional engineering management and leadership knowledge.
  • You'll complete applied projects that develop problem-solving and teamwork skills.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at Abbey Park Campus, with timetabled hours between 8am and 6pm. Teaching combines lectures, practical activities, and project-based work. Assessment is through assignments and applied projects rather than traditional exams. You'll work individually and in teams, developing both technical and professional skills throughout the year.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Leicester College Abbey Park Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.
