About this course

Level 3 NVQ Fabrication and Welding Engineering Course. Work-based training at your workplace. You complete this NVQ fabrication and welding engineering qualification while working in a relevant engineering role. The course covers complex fabrication and welding techniques across a range of pathways, including MIG, TIG and arc welding, sheet and plate metalworking, structural steelworking, pipe and tube fabrication, and robotic welding. You choose a pathway that matches your job role. The course typically takes two years. Fees apply; the cost is £3,000 per candidate, or £1,500 for candidates progressing directly from an NSEG Training Academy apprenticeship.

Who this course is for

Candidates wishing to demonstrate complex understanding of fabrication/welding techniques to include manual or robotic welding, sheet or plate metalworking, structural steelworking, pipe/tube fabrication and even rail welding. The qualification is applicable to a variety of fabricator/welder occupations and covers MIG/TIG and Arc welding, as well as the use of different fabrication machinery such as thermal cutters and shearing machines depending on the pathway chosen.

Entry requirements

The candidate must be in a role within the workplace that will support the qualification requirements and must have the potential to achieve the assessment criteria set out in the units.

There are no entry qualifications required by learners to undertake this qualification unless this is a legal requirement of the process or the environment

What you will learn

  • You'll apply MIG, TIG and arc welding techniques to industry standards.
  • You'll work with fabrication machinery including thermal cutters and shearing machines.
  • You'll carry out sheet metalworking and plate metalworking processes.
  • You'll demonstrate structural steelworking skills relevant to your job role.
  • You'll complete pipe and tube fabrication tasks.
  • You'll show understanding of manual and robotic welding methods.
  • You'll meet the assessment criteria set out in your chosen pathway units.

How you will learn

Assessment is work-based. You are observed carrying out tasks in your actual job role, and your competence is assessed against the units in your chosen pathway. Evidence is gathered from your workplace activities. You must be in a role that gives you the opportunity to meet the qualification's assessment criteria. There are no required entry qualifications unless the law or your work environment specifies one.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. NSEG Training Academy will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Welder. MIG, TIG or arc welding in manufacturing or construction.
  • Fabricator. Cutting, shaping and assembling metal components.
  • Structural steelworker. Building steel frameworks for construction projects.
  • Pipe fabricator. Fabricating and fitting pipework in industrial settings.
  • Robotic welding technician. Operating and overseeing automated welding systems.
  • Sheet metal worker. Forming and joining sheet metal for engineering products.
  • Rail welder. Specialist welding on rail infrastructure.

What you could study next

With a Level 3 NVQ Fabrication and Welding Engineering Qualification, you could move into supervisory or inspection roles. Options include a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification in engineering management or quality assurance. Some welders go on to gain coded welder certification through bodies such as the British Standards Institution or Lloyd's Register, which is valued for high-specification work in oil, gas, and pressure vessel industries. A Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering is another route if you want to move into a technical or engineering design role.
