What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with training. You work for an employer, earn a wage and study for a qualification at the same time.

At least 20% of your normal working hours are for training, and you are paid for that time too. Training can be at work, at a college or training provider, or online.

How much do apprentices get paid?

The minimum wage for apprentices is £8 an hour. It applies if you are 16 to 18 years old, or 19 or over and in the first year of your apprenticeship. After the first year, apprentices aged 19 or over get the minimum wage for their age.

You get at least 20 days of paid holiday a year, plus bank holidays. If you are under 25 and have been in local authority care, you may be able to get a bursary. Your training provider can tell you if you qualify.

Who can apply for an apprenticeship?

To start an apprenticeship, you need to be 16 or over, living in England and not in full-time education. Adults can apply too.

You can apply while you are still at school. You need to be 16 by the end of the summer holidays to start.

If you already have relevant experience, you could spend less time training or qualify sooner.

Apprenticeships in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are run by different organisations. GOV.UK lists them.

What levels of apprenticeship are there?

Each level matches a level of education.

  • Intermediate, Level 2: like GCSEs
  • Advanced, Level 3: like A levels
  • Higher, Levels 4 to 7: like a foundation degree and above
  • Degree, Levels 6 and 7: a bachelor’s or master’s degree

How long does an apprenticeship last?

From 8 months to 6 years. It depends on the type and level of the apprenticeship.

How do you apply for an apprenticeship?

Open a vacancy above to read about the job and its training. You apply through the government’s Find an apprenticeship service. You sign in or create an account, then complete and submit your application. Some employers send you to their own website to apply instead.

The National Careers Service has advice on writing applications and what to do at interviews. Your school, college or training provider may be able to give you advice about apprenticeships.
