About this course

Level 5 BTEC Higher National Diploma in Engineering for England Course. Study online at your own pace, fitting learning around work and other commitments. You'll need a relevant Level 3 engineering qualification or relevant work experience to enrol. The minimum age is 18. If your maths hasn't been studied to Level 3, a bridging course is strongly recommended before you start. This Pearson Edexcel qualification sits at the same level as the second year of a university degree, giving you a recognised route into the final year of an engineering degree programme. The course typically takes one year.

Who this course is for

BTEC Higher Nationals are internationally recognised higher education qualifications at levels 4 and 5 that are equivalent to the first and second years of a university degree. They provide learners with an affordable, vocational route to completing a degree, upskilling or employment. These courses are fully accredited by Pearson. This course is the ideal choice for you if:You want an affordable, fast-track, and guaranteed route towards the third and final year of an Engineering degree-related BA/BSc degree You are employed, do not have the time to go to college or university, and, therefore, need a more flexible route up the ladder. You currently work in an Engineering sector and want to upskill and progress in your role.

Entry requirements

A pre-requisite to gaining entry onto the HNC is to have a relevant level 3 qualification in engineering OR relevant work experience in the engineering. For those who have not studied up to level 3 in Maths, it is strongly recommended that you consider adding on the Bridging Maths course, learners may be required to complete a bridging course(s) before gaining entry onto an HNC/D. Age requirement: the minimum age requirement for this course is 18.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop engineering principles and apply them to practical problem-solving scenarios.
  • You'll study mathematics and science as they underpin engineering practice.
  • You'll analyse engineering systems and evaluate their performance.
  • You'll work through project-based assignments that reflect real engineering contexts.
  • You'll build technical knowledge across core engineering disciplines.
  • You'll develop skills in research, analysis, and written technical communication.

How you will learn

This is an online course delivered through self-paced study. Assessment is assignment-based, following the Pearson BTEC model. You'll complete written assignments and projects that are marked against set criteria. There are no timed exams for most units. You submit work online and receive feedback from your assessor. Study is flexible, so you can work through the material at a pace that suits you.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Unicourse will confirm anything else you need before you start.
