About this course

Free Functional Skills English Level 1 Course in Nottingham. Classes run at Adult Education at Arnold Library, on Tuesday mornings from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

The course runs for 22 weeks and covers reading, writing, and speaking and listening. You'll start with an initial assessment so your tutor can confirm the right level for you. Topics build your ability to understand and use everyday English in work and daily life.

You'll finish with a City and Guilds Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1, a recognised GCSE English alternative.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand a range of everyday texts, including letters, emails, and articles.
  • You'll write clearly for different purposes, such as forms, messages, and short reports.
  • You'll develop speaking and listening skills for everyday and work situations.
  • You'll plan and organise your writing to suit different audiences.
  • You'll identify the main points and purpose of spoken and written information.
  • You'll use grammar, punctuation, and spelling accurately in your writing.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a small group of 5 to 15 students in a classroom setting. Your tutor will support your reading, writing, and speaking and listening throughout the course. Near the end of the course, you'll be assessed on all three elements. Assessment is set by City and Guilds and covers each skill area separately. All resources are provided by your tutor.
