About this course

Level 2 Counselling Course in Leyland. Evening counselling classes run at Runshaw College, part-time over 30 weeks. Fee remission may be available depending on your circumstances. Contact Runshaw College directly for details. You'll develop listening and counselling skills to support others, whether in a voluntary role, paid employment, or as a stepping stone into the counselling field. The course is portfolio-based and requires English at Level 2 or above. If you don't hold an English GCSE at grade 4 or above, a diagnostic assessment will confirm whether this level is right for you.

Who this course is for

Adults (19+). Counselling Skills involve the ability to listen to another person and hear exactly what they are trying to say, from their point of view. This portfolio based course is designed for those who want to learn listening/counselling skills to help others, either in a voluntary or employed capacity, or those who want to find out more about this field.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold English GCSE grade A*-C/9-4 or equivalent. This is to support the oral/written skills and requirements of this course. If an applicant does not hold this qualification a diagnostic assessment will be carried out to ascertain the level at which they are working, a minimum of Level 2 is an entry requirement for this course. Furthermore, if you have already undergone some counselling skills training or use counselling skills in your employment, this would be an advantage.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop active listening skills to hear what someone is really communicating.
  • You'll learn how to respond to others from their point of view, not your own.
  • You'll explore the core values and boundaries that underpin counselling practice.
  • You'll build self-awareness and reflect on how your own experiences affect how you listen.
  • You'll practise counselling skills in structured exercises with other learners.
  • You'll compile a portfolio that evidences your skills and understanding throughout the course.

How you will learn

This is a portfolio-based course delivered in the classroom on weekday evenings. You'll build your portfolio throughout the 30 weeks, gathering evidence of your skills and reflections as you go. Learning takes place through group work, skills practice, and discussion. Assessment is through the portfolio you compile rather than a written exam.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Runshaw College will confirm anything else you need before you start.
