About this course

Free Level 2 Diploma Hairdressing Course. Work-based training at your workplace. You train in a salon while working, building your skills on real clients alongside off-the-job sessions at the Academy. The course takes around 2 years to complete. You'll cover the core skills a qualified stylist needs, from cutting and colouring to client consultation. An initial assessment checks your basic skills and helps plan any support you might need. Entry Level 3 and above is the typical starting point.

Who this course is for

An introduction to hairdressing to become a qualified stylist. Employed in a salon where training is undertaken with off the job skills and knowledge being delivered at the Academy.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements but each individual will undergo initial basic skills assessment to establish if any support will be necessary. Entry 3 and above would be acceptable entry 2 and below referral may be necessary.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn to cut hair using a range of techniques for different styles and hair types.
  • You'll learn to colour and lighten hair, including tinting and bleaching services.
  • You'll learn to style and finish hair using blow-drying and other finishing methods.
  • You'll learn to consult with clients, assess their needs, and recommend services.
  • You'll learn to shampoo, condition, and treat the scalp and hair.
  • You'll learn to work safely and hygienically in a salon environment.
  • You'll learn to set up and maintain your work area to professional standards.

How you will learn

You learn on the job in a salon, practising skills with clients as part of your daily work. Off-the-job training is delivered at the Academy, covering the knowledge and theory that underpins your practical work. Assessment includes observed practical tasks, knowledge tests, and a portfolio of evidence built up over the two years of the programme.
