About this course

Free Entry Level 3 Functional Skills English in York. Evening classes run at Explore York Library Learning Centre, so you can fit study around work or other commitments. The course runs for 33 weeks part-time. You'll build reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through a structured entry level functional skills english course. Functional Skills English Level 2 is the recognised GCSE English equivalent; this Entry Level 3 course is the step before that. The course is funded for learners in the York and North Yorkshire area who don't already hold a Level 2 or above in English.

Who this course is for

This course is funded for learners in the York area. If you do not live in York or North Yorkshire, we recommend contacting your local adult education provider.

The course will suit anyone who does not already have a qualification at Level 2 (GCSE 4+) or above in English.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand everyday texts, signs, and documents.
  • You'll write clearly for practical purposes such as forms, messages, and short notes.
  • You'll spell and punctuate common words accurately.
  • You'll listen and respond in straightforward conversations and discussions.
  • You'll speak clearly to communicate information and ask questions.
  • You'll identify the main points in spoken and written information.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Explore York Library Learning Centre during evening sessions. Assessment is through tasks that reflect real reading, writing, speaking, and listening situations. You'll complete a written assessment and a speaking and listening assessment. Both are set and marked to City and Guilds standards. Your tutor will carry out an initial assessment at the start to confirm Entry Level 3 is the right level for you and to plan your learning.
