Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. You'll have a short assessment before you start to see which is the right level of course for you

The course is free if you are: Unemployed or you are employed and earn less than £25,750 annual gross salary

Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August of the Academic Year for which they are enrolling

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand everyday texts such as signs, notices, and short documents.
  • You'll identify the main points in simple written English.
  • You'll follow written instructions in everyday situations.
  • You'll recognise and understand common vocabulary in context.
  • You'll use reading strategies to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words.
  • You'll build confidence reading texts related to daily life, work, and community.

How you will learn

Classes are classroom based and run part-time during the day. You'll work through reading tasks and activities with a teacher and other learners. Assessment is through tasks set by City and Guilds, which test your reading skills at Entry Level 3. There is no written exam in the traditional sense; assessment is task-based and completed as part of the course.
