This course is for those who are looking to improve their English skills, including reading, writing and speaking and listening. We have a variety of levels available to study, starting form entry level 1, all of the way through to level 2. This allows for individuals to gain an accredited qualification in this area, to support personal development and career pathways.

Entry requirements

Must meet all funding eligbility requirements, including:

  • Age 19+ on 31/08/25
  • Live in a Tees Valley Postcode
  • Not in any other form of funded training
  • Must meet all residency criteria to access funded training.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand short, simple texts.
  • You'll write simple sentences using basic punctuation.
  • You'll spell common everyday words.
  • You'll take part in simple spoken conversations.
  • You'll listen and respond to straightforward information.
  • You'll follow and give basic instructions.

How you will learn

You'll study through a blend of classroom sessions at Middlesbrough Central Library and online learning you can do in your own time. Assessment is through tasks and activities that test your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. There are no formal written exams at Entry Level 1. Your tutor will track your progress throughout the course.
