About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English in Selby. Classes run at Selby Adult Learning and Skills Service on evenings, so you can fit study around your week. The course runs for 18 weeks part-time. You'll build reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at Entry Level 1. It's a recognised entry level functional skills english qualification and a first step toward higher levels, including the Level 2 that employers accept as a GCSE english alternative.

This course is for people who want to improve their English skills and who currently, do not hold a current Entry Level 1 or higher qualification

Entry requirements

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand short, simple texts on familiar topics.
  • You'll write simple sentences using basic punctuation and spelling.
  • You'll listen to and follow straightforward spoken instructions.
  • You'll speak clearly to communicate basic information.
  • You'll identify key information in everyday documents such as signs, forms, and notices.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Selby Adult Learning and Skills Service. Assessment is through tasks that reflect everyday reading, writing, speaking, and listening situations. You'll be assessed on each skill area to demonstrate you've met the Entry Level 1 standard.
