About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English in Northallerton. Classes run at Richmond Adult Learning and Skills Service, part-time during the day over 18 weeks. You'll work on reading, writing, speaking, and listening at a manageable pace that fits around other commitments. This is an entry level functional skills english course designed for adults who don't yet hold an Entry Level 1 English qualification. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm the level is right for you.

This course is for people who want to improve their English skills and who currently, do not hold a current Entry Level 1 or higher qualification

Entry requirements

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand simple texts used in everyday life.
  • You'll write short sentences and simple messages clearly.
  • You'll spell common everyday words correctly.
  • You'll listen to and follow straightforward spoken information.
  • You'll speak clearly enough to be understood in familiar situations.
  • You'll use punctuation and basic grammar in your writing.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom sessions with a tutor. Activities include reading exercises, writing tasks, and speaking and listening practice. Assessment is through tasks set by City and Guilds, completed during the course. Your tutor will track your progress and support you throughout.
