About this course

Free Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English in Northallerton. Evening classes run at Skipton Adult Learning & Skills Service, so you can fit study around your week. This is a free functional skills english course for adults who want to build their English skills from the ground up. The course runs for 18 weeks part-time. You'll work on reading, writing, speaking, and listening at Entry Level 1.

This course is for people who want to improve their English skills and who currently, do not hold a current Entry Level 1 or higher qualification

Entry requirements

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand short, simple texts on familiar topics.
  • You'll write simple sentences using basic punctuation and spelling.
  • You'll listen to and follow short spoken instructions and information.
  • You'll speak clearly to share information in everyday situations.
  • You'll identify key information in signs, forms, and notices.

How you will learn

Classes are classroom based and run in the evening. You'll learn through group activities, guided reading and writing tasks, and spoken exercises with your tutor and classmates. Assessment is through tasks set by City and Guilds, covering reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Your tutor will support you through each element before you complete the assessments.
