About this course

Free Entry Level 1 English Course. Study online. You can work through the course at your own pace, which makes it easy to fit around work, family, or other commitments. The course covers reading, writing, speaking, and listening at Entry Level 1. It takes around 55 hours to complete. No exam is required. You must not already hold an Entry Level 1 or higher English qualification. Eligibility for funding is checked at enrolment.

Who this course is for

This course is for people who want to improve their English skills gain a qualification in English without having to take an exam.You must not have a current Entry 1 level or higher qualification.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August in the current academic year and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment

What you will learn

  • You'll read and understand simple written texts.
  • You'll write short sentences using basic punctuation and spelling.
  • You'll listen and respond to straightforward spoken information.
  • You'll speak clearly to communicate simple information.
  • You'll recognise and use everyday vocabulary in written and spoken English.

How you will learn

You study online at your own pace. Learning is portfolio-based rather than exam-based, so you build up evidence of your skills as you go. You'll complete tasks and activities that show what you can do in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. No timed exam is required to gain the qualification.

The centre will provide most materials. Northallerton Adult Learning and Skills Service will confirm anything else you need before you start.
