About this course

Level 3 Building Services Engineering Craftsperson Course in Barking and Dagenham. Classes run at Choice Training. This is a three-year, full-time daytime apprenticeship covering the installation, testing, commissioning, and decommissioning of large-scale heating and ventilation systems in commercial and industrial buildings. You'll work across new-build construction sites and existing buildings, reading drawings, liaising with other trades, and solving problems on the job. The course covers health and safety, quality control, environmental requirements, and sustainable energy systems. Entry typically requires Level 2 English and maths, and Level 1 ICT.

Entry requirements

Individual employers will identify any relevant entry requirements in terms of previous qualifications, trainability tests, or other criteria. Typically, most candidates will have English and Mathematics at level 2 and Information Communications Technology (ICT) level 1 on entry. All will have achieved English at level 2, Mathematics at level 2 and ICT at level 1 by the end of the apprenticeship.

What you will learn

  • You'll install, test, pre-commission, commission, and decommission large-scale heating and ventilation systems.
  • You'll read and interpret engineering drawings and client instructions to plan your work.
  • You'll apply health and safety, quality control, and environmental standards throughout your work.
  • You'll liaise with other trades, suppliers, and clients on construction sites and in existing buildings.
  • You'll identify and solve problems within the scope of your work without supervision.
  • You'll plan and monitor work programmes for engineering system installation and maintenance.
  • You'll work with fossil fuel and sustainable energy systems that control temperature in large buildings.

How you will learn

This apprenticeship combines classroom-based learning at Choice Training with on-the-job experience in the workplace. Assessment is through an End Point Assessment, which tests your knowledge, skills, and behaviours against the Building Services Engineering Craftsperson standard. You'll also need to achieve Level 2 English, Level 2 maths, and Level 1 ICT before the end of the apprenticeship if you don't already hold them.
