About this course

Level 2 Plant Operations (Construction) Course. Work-based training at your workplace. You train on the job, building the competence needed to progress from a CPCS or NPORS/CSCS Red Trained Operators Card to the Blue Competence Card. The course covers 160 hours of work-based learning across the relevant plant machine or machines you operate. A level 2 plant operations (construction) qualification like this one is a recognised step for operators working toward full competence status on site.

Who this course is for

This is a stand alone qualification and also a requirement for learners progressing from the CPCS or NPORS/CSCS Red Trained Operators Card to the Blue Competence.

Entry requirements

Learners must be physical able and demonstrate a safe and responsible approach to operating the relevant machine(s).

What you will learn

  • You'll demonstrate safe and responsible operation of the relevant construction plant machine(s).
  • You'll apply health and safety practices specific to plant operations on construction sites.
  • You'll show competence in pre-use checks and routine maintenance of plant equipment.
  • You'll follow site procedures and work within the relevant regulations for plant operation.
  • You'll meet the competence standards required for progression to a Blue Competence Card.

How you will learn

This is a work-based qualification. You are assessed in your actual job role, operating plant machinery in a real construction environment. Assessment is by observation of your practice on site, along with a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your competence. You must be physically able to operate the relevant machine and show a safe, responsible approach throughout.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Keith Cook Training Springfield Farm will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Plant operator. Operate excavators, dumpers, or other construction plant on site.
  • Crane operator. Progress to specialist lifting plant with further training.
  • Site operative. Broader construction site role supported by plant competence.

  • Quarry plant operator. Plant operations in quarrying and extraction environments.

What you could study next

Completing this level 2 plant operations (construction) qualification and holding a Blue Competence Card opens routes to further plant categories and specialist machine endorsements. You could also work toward a Level 3 NVQ in Plant Operations for supervisory or more complex plant roles, or pursue additional CPCS or NPORS category tickets to extend the range of machines you are licensed to operate.
