About this course

Level 1 Construction Skills Course in Bristol. Classes run at SGS College Filton Campus, full-time during the day.

This construction skills qualification covers the core trades. You'll get hands-on experience in bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, painting and decorating, and general construction skills. The course runs for around 378 hours of study. Most full-time places are for learners aged 16 to 18 years old. If you are 19 or over, please check with the college, as full-time programmes may not be suitable and concessions may be available.

You'll finish with a City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills.

Who this course is for

Most full-time courses at SGS are for learners aged 16-18 with some provision available for those aged 14 plus on request. If you are aged 19 and over then formal qualifications that are a prerequisite for younger age groups may not be suitable.   • You'll learn basic carpentry and joinery techniques.
  • You'll practise plastering on walls and surfaces.
  • You'll apply painting and decorating skills to interior surfaces.
  • You'll follow health and safety rules on construction sites.
  • You'll use hand tools and power tools correctly and safely.
  • You'll learn how to work as part of a construction team.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical, hands-on sessions in workshops and classrooms. Assessment is through practical tasks and skills tests that show what you can do. You may also complete short written assignments. Your tutor will observe your work and give feedback throughout the course.
