About this course

HNC Automation and Control Engineering. Study online at your own pace, fitting learning around work or other commitments. The course typically takes one year to complete. You'll need a relevant Level 3 engineering qualification or relevant work experience to enrol. Learners who haven't studied Maths to Level 3 may be asked to complete a bridging course first. The minimum age for entry is 18.

The course covers automation systems, control engineering principles, electrical and electronic engineering, and mathematics for engineers. It is a Pearson Edexcel BTEC qualification, internationally recognised and equivalent to the first year of an engineering degree.

You'll finish with a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Automation and Control Engineering.

Who this course is for

BTEC Higher Nationals are internationally recognised higher education qualifications at levels 4 and 5 that are equivalent to the first and second years of a university degree. They provide learners with an affordable, vocational route to completing a degree, upskilling or employment. These courses are fully accredited by Pearson. This course is the ideal choice for you if:You want an affordable, fast-track, and guaranteed route towards the third and final year of an Engineering degree-related BA/BSc degree You are employed, do not have the time to go to college or university, and, therefore, need a more flexible route up the ladder. You currently work in an Engineering sector and want to upskill and progress in your role.

Entry requirements

A pre-requisite to gaining entry onto the HNC is to have a relevant level 3 qualification in engineering OR relevant work experience in the engineering. For those who have not studied up to level 3 in Maths, it is strongly recommended that you consider adding on the Bridging Maths course, learners may be required to complete a bridging course(s) before gaining entry onto an HNC/D. Age requirement: the minimum age requirement for this course is 18.

What you will learn

  • You'll study automation systems and how they are designed and applied in industry.
  • You'll develop knowledge of control engineering principles, including feedback and closed-loop systems.
  • You'll apply electrical and electronic engineering concepts to real engineering problems.
  • You'll build mathematical skills relevant to engineering analysis and problem-solving.
  • You'll explore programmable logic controllers and their use in automated processes.
  • You'll develop an understanding of engineering project management and professional practice.

How you will learn

You study online, working through course materials at your own pace. Assessment is through assignments and projects rather than exams. Each unit is assessed separately, and you submit work for marking as you progress. This approach lets you balance study with work or other commitments.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Unicourse will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do
