About this course

Free Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition Course in Walsall. Classes run at Aldridge School, full-time during the day over two years. You'll study the science of food and nutrition, including how to meet the nutritional needs of different groups and how to keep food safe to eat. Practical sessions run alongside classroom learning, so you develop hands-on cooking and food preparation skills as well as scientific understanding. Entry requires a minimum of five Grade 5s at GCSE, including at least a Grade 5 in English or Maths and a Grade 4 in the other.

Who this course is for

Unit 1 Meeting Nutritional needs of specific groups

will enable the learner to demonstrate an understanding of nutrition and nutritional needs in a wide range of contexts, and through on–going practical sessions, gain practical skills to produce quality food items to meet the needs of individuals.

Unit 2 Ensuring food is safe to eat

will develop an understanding of hazards and risks in relation to the storage, preparation and cooking of food in different environments and the control measures needed to minimise these risks.

Unit 4 Current issues in food science and nutrition

develop the skills needed to plan, carry out and present a research project on current issues linked to issues related to food science and nutrition. This could be from the perspective of a consumer, food manufacturer, caterer and/or policymaking perspective.

Entry requirements

Level 3 Academic Route Entry Requirements: Minimum of five Grade 5s or above in separate subjects. A minimum of a Grade 5 in English or Maths and at least a Grade 4 in the other. Each subject will also have their own entry criteria which have to be adhered to.
