About this course

BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design Practice in Nottingham. Classes run at Nottingham College Adams Building, full-time over two years. Students aged 16 to 18 years old do not pay tuition fees. If you are 19 or over, you may still be eligible for funding.

The course covers drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, print-making, photography, graphic media, and 3D design. In year one, you explore a wide range of materials and processes. In year two, you choose a specialist pathway in areas such as 2D and 3D art, graphic design and illustration, or design and architecture. You build a portfolio through live briefs, industry visits, and guest speakers, finishing with a major project and public exhibition.

You'll complete this Level 3 art and design practice qualification as a Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Diploma.

Who this course is for

This course is perfect if you want to develop your interest in art and design in all its forms and pursue a future in the creative industries, but haven't yet chosen an area of specialism.

Entry requirements

You'll need 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C), including English Language and Maths - both of these must be grades 9-4 (A*-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths, or a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification with English and Maths GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C). You will require a GCSE Grade 9-4 in Art/Photography/Textiles/Design Technology. You will be invited to an informal interview at College with an Art and Design Tutor.

How you will learn

You learn through practical workshops, studio projects, and research tasks. Assessment is portfolio-based, with work built up across both years. You take part in live briefs, visits to universities and galleries, and sessions with industry guest speakers. The course ends with a final major project and a public exhibition. An informal interview with an Art and Design Tutor takes place before you start.
