About this course

Level 3 Art and Design Course in Grays. Classes run at USP College Palmers Campus, full-time over two years. It's free for learners aged 16 to 18 years old. If you're 19 or over, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available.

The course covers a broad range of creative disciplines. You'll work on projects in painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic image-making, illustration, photography, fashion, public art, and special effects make-up. You'll also develop research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work to tight deadlines. Live briefs and work-based learning are part of the programme.

You'll finish with a University of the Arts London Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication.

Who this course is for

Do you have artistic flair? This course will see you learn more about the creative and practical side of art and design. Art is a general term, which encompasses many areas of specialisation and different types of employment. Design is a fascinating, exciting and rewarding way of earning a living; modern society cannot function without it.

You will undertake a range of specialist projects, including: graphics, printing, sculpting, painting, advertising, marketing and branding, illustration, public artwork and special effects make-up.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language or Maths. Grade 4 or above in an Art, Design or Media based GCSE is preferred.

A Level 2 BTEC Diploma or above and GCSE English Language or Maths at grade 4 or above. Grade 4 or above in an Art, Design or Media based GCSE is preferred.

Students will be required to present a portfolio or sketchbook of artwork as part of the interview process to demonstrate commitment and potential

Live briefs and work-based learning form part of the programme. You'll also present a portfolio as part of the entry process, and portfolio development continues throughout the course.
