About this course

Free Level 3 Applied Science Course in Keighley. Classes run at South Craven School, full-time over two years.

The course covers Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. You'll study material from all three sciences and complete units assessed in a variety of ways, including practical and written work. Entry requires at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including two science GCSEs and Maths. A bursary may be available to help with costs.

You'll finish with a Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science.

Who this course is for

We offer you the chance to combine knowledge and skills from the three scientific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There are a variety of units completed that cover material from all three sciences and are assessed in different ways. This course is ideal for students who enjoy the practical hands-on element of Science, prefer to be assessed in a variety of ways and do not wish to follow the traditional advanced courses.

You may also wish to pursue a scientific course in higher education or go into employment in the Science industry. You will learn by completing assignments that are based on realistic scenarios in the scientific workplace and studying relevant fundamental scientific concepts to develop your knowledge.

You will develop skills in three main categories - cognitive and problem solving skills (critical thinking, systems and technology), intrapersonal skills (communication, collaborative working) and interpersonal skills (self-management, adaptability, resilience).

Entry requirements

To enter South Craven Sixth Form students need to have achieved Grade 9-4 at GCSE (A*-C), or Merits in other level 2 qualifications (e.g. BTEC, OCR Nationals), in at least 5 separate subjects including English Lit/English Language or Maths. This is considered to be the minimum entry requirement. Must include Two Grade 4s in GCSE Science and Grade 4 in Mathematics

What you will learn

  • You'll study core concepts across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • You'll develop practical laboratory skills through hands-on scientific work.
  • You'll apply scientific knowledge to real investigations and experiments.
  • You'll complete units assessed through coursework, practical tasks, and written exams.
  • You'll build an understanding of how the three sciences connect and overlap.

How you will learn

You'll learn through a mix of classroom teaching and practical laboratory sessions. Assessment combines coursework, practical assignments, and externally set exams. Different units are assessed in different ways, so no single method dominates. Full-time daytime attendance is required at South Craven School across the two-year programme.
