About this course

Level 3 Applied Science Course in Leeds. Classes run at Luminate Education, full-time during the day over two years. It's free if you're 16 to 18 years old. If you're 19 or over, fees may apply, though a Learner Loan may be available.

The course covers biology, chemistry, and physics alongside practical laboratory skills. You'll work in professional-standard facilities and develop the hands-on techniques employers look for in science roles. You need four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English or Maths. If your grades are below 4, English and Maths support is built into the course.

You'll finish with a Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science.

Who this course is for

Those that don’t have a qualification in GCSE science and are looking to take the next step towards a career in science. They are particularly ideal for individuals who want to combine academic study with practical skills, study in professional-standard facilities and take advantage of our industry links.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English or Maths. English and Maths will be built into your course if your grades are below 4.

What you will learn

  • You'll study core biology, chemistry, and physics principles at Level 3.
  • You'll develop practical laboratory skills used in real scientific work.
  • You'll learn how to plan, carry out, and evaluate scientific investigations.
  • You'll build data analysis skills, including interpreting experimental results.
  • You'll explore how science applies across industry, health, and research settings.
  • You'll develop scientific communication skills, both written and verbal.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom teaching and hands-on laboratory sessions. Assessment is a mix of coursework assignments and external examinations. Practical units are assessed through portfolio evidence and observed tasks.
