About this course

Level 2 Sport Course in Darlington. Classes run full-time at Darlington College, five days a week during the day. This course is free if you are 16 to 18 years old. If you are 19 or over, fees may apply. The course runs in partnership with Martin Gray Football Academy and is designed for those starting out in sport, physical activity, and coaching. You must be an elite-level footballer and complete a trial before being selected. The course runs for 34 weeks. You'll cover coaching, fitness, and sport science, and may be selected for the Elite Coaching and Development Squad.

Who this course is for

This course runs in partnership with Martin Gray Football Academy, offering you the chance to be selected for our Elite Coaching and Development Squad, (which offers additional experience and personal conditioning. Our elite squad will play in the National College League).

The name of the qualification you will receive is a diploma in Health and Fitness.

This qualification is for learners who want to start a career in sport and physical activity, coaching and outdoor activity. It is designed for post-16 students and can be taken as part of a wider study programme. It is an ideal qualification for learners intending to progress directly to employment within sport and activity leadership, or to an apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

You need 5 GCSE’s at 3 points or D-E grade and above, including English and maths, or a Level 1 qualification in sport. We will request a school or college report, and you attend an interview at the college.

You must be an elite level footballer and also successfully complete a football trial with Martin Gray before being selected.

The dates for the trials that take place throughout the year will be given following initial application.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom sessions, practical sport activities, and football training with Martin Gray Football Academy. Assessment is through coursework, practical tasks, and observations. You'll attend daytime classes full-time across 34 weeks at Darlington College. Selected learners will also gain experience through the Elite Coaching and Development Squad, which competes in the National College League.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Darlington College will confirm anything else you need before you start. You should expect to need appropriate sportswear and football boots for practical sessions.
