About this course

Level 2 Site Carpentry Course in Birmingham. Classes run at Longbridge Campus, with separate sessions for 16 to 18 year olds and adults. This full-time, daytime site carpentry course runs for one year and covers a broad range of practical woodworking skills. You'll work in fully equipped workshops with industry-standard tools, learning carcassing, first and second fixing, circular saw operation, and carpentry maintenance. If you're 16 to 18, you'll need to have completed a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery first. Adults aged 19 and over go straight onto Level 2.

Who this course is for

This Level 2 one-year qualification is for you if you are looking to start a career in the construction sector and learn a trade as a carpenter. There are separate classes for 16-18 year olds and for adults. Our construction centres are the perfect place for you to develop your skills and knowledge of the profession. You will benefit from fully equipped workshops with industry standard equipment, and tutors, who have a wealth of industry experience, to help you get to grips with this fast-paced industry. You can focus on either carpentry or bench joinery.

Entry requirements

You'll need to have completed the Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery at Level 1 if you are 16-18.

If you are aged 19+ then you will go direct onto a Level 2.

If you have not achieved your maths and English to GCSE Grade 4, you will study for these alongside this course.

What you will learn

  • You'll set up and operate a circular saw safely.
  • You'll carry out carcassing work.
  • You'll complete first fixing tasks, including partitions, frames, and stairs.
  • You'll complete second fixing tasks, including doors, locks, and kitchens.
  • You'll carry out carpentry maintenance and repairs.
  • You'll develop practical woodworking techniques across a range of tasks.
  • You'll build knowledge of health and safety practices on construction sites.

How you will learn

This is a hands-on course. Most of your learning takes place in practical workshops, using industry-standard equipment. There is also classroom-based work to support your practical training. You'll have regular contact with construction companies, which extends your learning beyond the workshop. Maths and English are studied alongside the course if you haven't yet reached GCSE Grade 4 in those subjects.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Longbridge Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.
