About this course

Level 2 Diploma Plumbing Course in Birmingham. Classes run full-time at South & City College Birmingham Longbridge Construction Campus, one day a year. The course takes one year. Fees may apply depending on your circumstances, though funding may be available if you're 16 to 18 years old or meet other eligibility criteria. You'll cover health and safety, cold and hot water systems, drainage, sanitation, and central heating. The course builds the practical and technical skills needed for employment or further training in the plumbing sector. It is not a full plumbing licence, but it is the foundation employers and colleges look for.

Who this course is for

Are you a school-leaver or an adult looking to learn a trade and become a qualified plumber? This one year, Level 2 qualification does not make you a fully qualified plumber, however it allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the plumbing sector. For 16-18 year olds who have not passed their GCSE maths and English and hold a Grade 3, you will be able to re-take your exams.

Entry requirements

You will need to demonstrate motivation and a keen interest in the plumbing and building services engineering industry. For 16-18 year olds a Level 1 Diploma in Plumbing is a requirement and GCSE Maths and English Grade 3 or above in each subject or equivalent. For Adult learners Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths and English is a requirement. Some relevant industry experience is desirable. An interview and an assessment at the college may also give you entry to the course.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn health and safety practices in building services engineering.
  • You'll study electrical principles and processes used in building services engineering.
  • You'll explore scientific principles for domestic, industrial, and commercial plumbing.
  • You'll practise common plumbing processes and techniques.
  • You'll work with cold water systems and domestic hot water systems.
  • You'll learn about drainage systems and sanitation.
  • You'll study central heating systems and how they operate.
  • You'll develop above-ground drainage skills.

How you will learn

The course uses a mix of practical workshop sessions and tutorials. You'll work hands-on in a construction campus environment, applying plumbing techniques directly. Assessment is through practical tasks and written work. If you're 16 to 18 years old and hold a Grade 3 in GCSE Maths and English, you'll also have the opportunity to resit those exams alongside the course.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. South & City College Birmingham Longbridge Construction Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Plumbing labourer or trainee plumber, working toward full qualification.
  • Building services engineering assistant, supporting installation teams.
  • Maintenance operative, handling basic plumbing repairs in commercial or residential settings.
  • Apprentice plumber, combining work and further study at Level 3.

What you could study next

After this Course, you could move on to a Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating. That qualification takes you further toward becoming a fully qualified plumber and is the level many employers require for skilled roles. You could also apply for a plumbing apprenticeship, which combines paid work with Level 3 study. Some learners use this Diploma as a stepping stone to a Higher Technical Qualification or further vocational training in building services engineering.
