About this course

Level 2 Counselling Course in York. Evening classes run at The Centre at Burnholme, combining online study with time at the centre. Fee reductions are available for some learners, and fees may apply for others. Over 30 weeks part-time, you'll develop practical counselling skills to support people in health, education, community, and voluntary settings. This is not a qualification that gives you counsellor status, but it gives you tools and techniques you can apply in a helping or supportive role.

Who this course is for

This course will increase your confidence and competence in the understanding and application of counselling skills to help others, in a wider helping role (either in a voluntary or employed capacity). On completion of the course, you will not have a qualified counsellor status (this will involve further study and experience) but it will provide you with some useful tools and techniques that can be applied in a helping / supportive role in various settings e.g. health, education, community, youth, and social work. Upon completion of the 7 mandatory units, you will be able to listen to and support others safely and professionally. You are required to complete an electronic portfolio of work to gain the full qualification.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop core counselling skills to use in supportive and helping roles.
  • You'll learn how to listen actively and respond effectively to people in need of support.
  • You'll explore the principles and values that underpin counselling practice.
  • You'll understand how counselling skills apply across health, education, and community settings.
  • You'll practise techniques for building trust and rapport with the people you support.
  • You'll reflect on your own communication style and how it affects others.

How you will learn

This is a blended learning course. You'll complete some study online in your own time and attend evening classes at The Centre at Burnholme. Assessment is through written work and skills practice. You'll be observed applying counselling skills in role-play and group activities. Reflective practice is a key part of the course, so you'll keep a record of your learning and development throughout the 30 weeks.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. The Centre at Burnholme will confirm anything else you need before you start.
