About this course

Free Level 2 Car Mechanic Course in Nottingham. Classes run at Nottingham College Highfields Campus, full-time during the day. You'll need GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade 4 or above to apply, and you must be aged 16 to 18 years old. Over one year, you'll learn how to service and repair cars and vans, and how to diagnose and solve faults on vehicles. This fast-track route is designed to take you from Level 2 to Level 3 in two years rather than three.

Who this course is for

This course is perfect if you’re aged 16-18 and looking to use your sound academic ability to fast track your skills and knowledge of car maintenance and repair further. Our Level 2 Fast Track is a great way to help you work towards securing an apprenticeship within the Automotive trade or working towards a level 3 qualification.

If you are expected to achieve 5 GCSE grades at 9-5 including English Language and Maths, then you are now eligible to apply for our Fast Track Level 2 course. This would mean you can achieve a Level 2 and then potentially achieve Level 3 in two years, which is one less than the usual path of one year for each Level (1, 2 and 3). This would allow you to be qualified and working in a technician role a whole year sooner than those who traditionally start at Level 1 and build up from there.

Entry requirements

You’ll need both GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade 4 or above.

You must also be aged 16-18.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn how to service cars and light vans to manufacturer standards.
  • You'll develop skills in diagnosing and solving non-complex vehicle faults.
  • You'll study the principles of vehicle systems, including engines, brakes, and electrical components.
  • You'll practise safe working procedures in a workshop environment.
  • You'll build the theoretical knowledge needed to progress to Level 3 automotive training.

How you will learn

You'll study in a classroom and workshop setting at Highfields Campus. Learning combines theoretical coursework with hands-on practical work on vehicles. Assessment is through a combination of written work and practical tasks. The course is fast-paced and requires a high level of commitment to both theory and practical elements.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Nottingham College Highfields Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.
