About this course

Level 2 Barbering Course in Leicester. Classes run at Leicester College Freemen's Park Campus, full-time during the day. No previous barbering knowledge or experience is required to start. You'll cover cutting, colouring, styling, beard and moustache work, scalp massage, and consultation skills. The course runs over one year. You may need to bring in clients to complete some practical assessments. This is a City and Guilds level 2 barbering qualification, giving you the skills to work as a junior barber and the foundation to progress further.

Who this course is for

This qualification aims to provide you with a range of technical practical skills and theory, which will equip you to progress on to the level 3 Barbering course. You don�t need any previous knowledge or experience to start this qualification. You may need to supply clients for the course, to enable you to complete assessments.

On this course you will learn all of the technical skills and knowledge needed to work as a junior Barber, including colouring, cutting, beards, moustaches and styling services. Barbering services provide a range of opportunities in an exciting sector, which is growing in popularity.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities. For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and math's at grade 3 (D) or above is required. A good reference is also required from school or an employer. You will also have an interview and a skills test to ensure you meet the criteria for the course.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical, hands-on sessions in a salon environment alongside classroom-based theory. Assessment includes practical skills tests, where you'll work on real clients to demonstrate your techniques. You'll also complete written or knowledge-based assessments covering the theory behind each service. An initial interview and skills test take place before the course begins.

The centre will provide most materials. Leicester College Freemen's Park Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start. Be aware that you may need to supply your own clients during the course to complete your practical assessments.
