About this course

Free Level 1 Health and Safety within a Construction Environment Course in Rotherham. Classes run at Rotherham Skills Academy, full-time during the day. This is a free health and safety within a construction environment course for adults who are unemployed and living in the East Midlands Combined County Authority area. You'll need to be 19 or over as at 31 August 2025. The course runs over 3 weeks and covers the health and safety knowledge you need to work safely on construction sites. It is part of an Introduction to Sustainable Construction programme.

What you will learn

  • You'll identify the main health and safety hazards found on construction sites.
  • You'll understand your legal responsibilities as a worker in a construction environment.
  • You'll learn how to report accidents, incidents, and near misses correctly.
  • You'll recognise the importance of personal protective equipment and when to use it.
  • You'll understand safe working practices for common construction tasks.
  • You'll learn how to respond to emergency situations on site.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at Rotherham Skills Academy. Teaching covers health and safety knowledge through tutor-led instruction and group activities. Assessment is by a written test or short-answer questions set by Highfield. You'll complete the assessment during the course. No prior construction experience is needed. You'll have an initial assessment before you start so the centre can confirm this is the right level for you.
