About this course

Free Functional Skills Maths Level 1 Course in Birmingham. Classes run at Fircroft College of Adult Education, part-time during the day.

The course runs over around 5 months. It covers number, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, and basic data handling. These are the maths skills employers and colleges look for. A Level 1 functional skills maths qualification is a recognised GCSE maths alternative, accepted by many employers and further education providers.

To join, you'll need an Entry Level 3 Maths certificate or you can take a short entry test at the college. You'll finish with a City and Guilds Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics at Level 1.

Functional skills maths is a nationally recognised qualification proving mathematical competency to employers and education providers such as colleges and universities.

We know not everyone loves maths! But knowledge of maths is vital for everyday life as well as employment and education progression.

Be assured that we do not presume that you will come to us with any real knowledge of maths, it may have been a long time since you last studied maths and that is perfectly OK, we will move at your pace.

This course is an ideal starter course for people who want to improve their knowledge, increase their employment opportunities or achieve certain qualifications and who do not have a GCSE at grade C or above in Maths, or an equivalent qualification such as a Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths.

Entry requirements

A certificate of Entry Level 3 Maths is to be provided on application (our Admissions team will be in touch with you about this) or if you are unable to produce a certificate, you can take an entry test to have your level of Maths ability assessed.

What you will learn

  • You'll work with whole numbers, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • You'll calculate with fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • You'll use measures such as length, weight, capacity, and time.
  • You'll read and interpret charts, tables, and graphs.
  • You'll solve practical maths problems set in everyday and work contexts.
  • You'll check and explain your working clearly.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Fircroft College of Adult Education, with a tutor guiding each session. Assessment is by a written exam set by City and Guilds. The exam tests your ability to apply maths skills to real tasks. You'll practise exam-style questions throughout the course so you feel prepared before you sit it.
