About this course

Free Functional Skills Qualification in English in Birmingham. Classes run at Fircroft College of Adult Education, part-time during the day.

The course covers reading, writing, and speaking and listening. It runs over around 127 days at a manageable pace. You'll need to be working at Level 1 literacy or above to join. If you're not quite there yet, the college offers the course at other levels too. Level 2 Functional Skills English is the recognised GCSE English equivalent, accepted by employers and universities across the UK.

Who this course is for

Our Functional Skills English Level 2 course is designed to enhance your essential communication skills for real-world scenarios. This course focuses on three key areas: reading, writing, and speaking and listening.

Level 2 Functional Skills is equivalent to a pass in GCSE English Language and is considered the ‘golden ticket’ to many employment and higher education opportunities.

We recommend you apply for our other Functional Skills courses if you do not already have these qualifications as they are useful certificates to have for work and volunteering, as well as enhancing your everyday essential skills.

Entry requirements

You must be working at Level 1 literacy, or above and may be given an initial assessment for us to understand the level you are working at. If you do not meet the requirements for this course, we do offer Functional Skills English courses at other levels that you are welcome to apply for.

  • You'll write clearly and accurately for different purposes and audiences.
  • You'll structure your writing using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

How you will learn

Classes are classroom based and run part-time during the day. You'll study reading, writing, and speaking and listening through tasks and activities linked to real-life situations. Assessment is by formal examination and a portfolio of written work. The speaking and listening component is assessed by your tutor during the course.
