About this course

Free Functional Skills English Level 1 Course in Birmingham. Classes run at Fircroft College of Adult Education, part-time during the day.

The course runs over 20 weeks and covers reading, writing, and speaking and listening. You'll develop the skills to understand and communicate clearly in everyday situations. It suits people working toward Level 2 and those who want to build a stronger foundation in English first. You'll need to show you're working at around Entry Level 3 English to join. The college will ask you to complete a short English assessment as part of your application.

You'll finish with a City and Guilds Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1.

Who this course is for

This Level 1 course focuses on key areas such as reading, writing and speaking and listening, ensuring that students can effectively understand and communicate in various contexts.

This course is ideal for students who have longer term study plans but are not yet ready for Level 2.

Also, whilst primarily aimed at people whose first language is English, it does attract a lot of students for whom English is an additional language, as well as other students with a lower level of English than the national standard (Level 2).

We can recommend it for stronger ESOL students who have passed our Entry-Level 3 ESOL course.

If applicants have not studied and completed an Entry-Level 3 course at Fircroft previously, they will be asked to complete an English language assessment at the college to determine their current level of English. It is recommended that people with a stronger level of English only, apply, to avoid disappointment.

The main benefit of Functional Skills English is that the skills can be used in a range of real life scenarios. The course focuses on topics which are reflected in the news, society and the 6 Fircroft College values, with some focus on sustainability. It’s an accredited course with a nationally recognised certificate awarded on completion.
