About this course

Free Functional Skills English Level 1 Course in Leicester. Classes run at Thurmaston the Roundhill Academy, part-time during the day over 26 weeks.

No formal entry requirements are needed. You'll develop your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through activities linked to everyday life and work. When you're ready, you'll sit your assessments. This qualification is a recognised GCSE English alternative and is accepted by many employers in place of a GCSE.

You'll finish with a Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1.

Who this course is for

The course will help you to develop confidence and skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course activities and materials will link to everyday life and work experiences.

Entry Level courses are delivered in a classroom over 25 weeks. You will be entered for the assessments when you are ready. Entry Level assessments take place in class time.

Level 1 and 2 courses are delivered either in a classroom or online over 26 weeks. The speaking and listening and reading exams take place during the 26 week programme and the writing exam is taken after the final session.

All Level 1 and Level 2 learners on classroom and online courses will be required to attend one of our centres to take all exams.

Functional Skills English qualifications are recognised by employers and a Level 2 qualification, is an equivalent skill level to GCSE English.

How you will learn

Classes are classroom-based and run during the day. You'll work through reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities linked to real-life and work situations. You'll sit separate assessments for speaking and listening, reading, and writing. You'll be entered for each assessment when you're ready. Reading and writing exams are taken under timed conditions. Speaking and listening assessments take place in class.
