A level 1 functional skills english course sits alongside this as part of a broader programme at the centre. Note: to join, you must already be enrolled on a vocational qualification at one of the GAPS centres.

Who this course is for

Young people aged 16-18 (and 16-24 with an EHCP) who would like to gain a qualification in Functional Skills Maths.

What you will learn

  • You'll work with numbers and the number system, including whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • You'll use common measures, including length, weight, capacity, and time.
  • You'll work with shape and space, including area, perimeter, and angles.
  • You'll handle and interpret data, including tables, charts, and graphs.
  • You'll apply maths to everyday situations, including budgeting and cost-of-living calculations.
  • You'll prepare for both calculator and non-calculator assessments.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at Basildon GAPS Trade Centre, with daytime sessions across 55 hours of study. Assessment is by two exams: one where you can use a calculator and one where you cannot. Both are set and marked externally. Your learning covers three areas: numbers and the number system, measures and shape, and handling data.
