Free BTEC Level 2 Sport Course in Southend-on-Sea. Classes run full-time at South Essex College Southend Campus, starting September 2026. The course is free for UK learners under 19 who are not in employment. This is a practical, hands-on level 2 BTEC sport qualification covering fitness, anatomy, sports performance, coaching, and outdoor activities. You'll also complete a work experience placement in sport. Weekly practical sessions put sports coaching at the centre of your learning. The course runs for 12 months. You'll need a Level 1 qualification, or two GCSEs at grade 3 or above in Maths or English, to enrol.
Who this course is for
Former Southend United manager Steve Tilson heads this course which will prepare you for a career in sport. Training three times a week with match day on Wednesdays, this course will enhance your skills and allow you to progress to further studies within the sports curriculum area.

What you will learn
You'll study fitness for sport and exercise, including how to train for personal fitness.
You'll explore anatomy and physiology and how the body performs in sport.

You'll design exercise programmes for different goals and needs.
You'll carry out a sport-related project from start to finish.

How you will learn
You'll be assessed through a mix of methods across the units. These include a computer-based test, practical officiating assessments, session plans, portfolios, a training diary, a presentation, a video, a reflective log, and a website design portfolio. Learning takes place in the classroom and through practical sessions on the field each week.
