About this course

Entry Level 1 Personal and Social Skills Course in Poole. Classes run at the Dolphin Centre, one day a week on Tuesdays from 10am to 3pm. The course is designed for adults with a mild to moderate learning disability. It focuses on building the personal and social skills needed for everyday and independent life. Classes run over 34 weeks, giving you time to learn at a steady pace. Concessions are available, so fees may be lower depending on your circumstances.

Who this course is for

This course is specifically designed for adults who have a mild to moderate learning disability and may be particularly helpful to those who are working towards gaining independent living skills.

You will need to consider the level of support you may need during the sessions as the course will have one tutor and may have one learning support assistant. This means that one-to-one support may be limited to ensure that everyone gets the help they need. However, we do provide a limited number of spaces so that your carer or support worker can also attend the course with you, should you require. Please inform us when enrolling if you intend to bring your own support so we can accommodate them.

You do not need any previous experience in the subject but should have an interest in your own potential and what life has to offer. You will need to be prepared to take an active part in the sessions and to work in a group setting.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop personal skills to support greater independence in daily life.
  • You'll practise social skills to help you communicate and interact with others.
  • You'll build confidence in managing everyday tasks and routines.
  • You'll explore ways to look after your own wellbeing.
  • You'll work on skills that support you in community settings.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at the Dolphin Centre. The course uses practical activities suited to your needs. Assessment is ongoing throughout the course, based on your participation and the skills you demonstrate. One tutor leads the sessions, and a learning support assistant may also be present. One-to-one support is available but may be limited to ensure all learners get help.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Skills & Learning Adult Community Education will confirm anything else you need before you start.
