After this apprenticeship

This role provides an excellent foundation for a career in commercial administration, sales, account management or estimating.

The successful candidate will gain practical experience of how the business wins and secures work, develop a broad range of transferable skills and work closely with experienced professionals in the Commercial team.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there may be the opportunity of a permanent role within the Commercial team.

As knowledge, skills and experience develop, there may be opportunities to progress into roles such as:

  • Commercial Administrator or Commercial Coordinator
  • Estimator
  • Account Manager
  • Business Development Executive
  • Permits or Planning Coordinator

TMO Highways is committed to supporting employee development and encourages continuous learning through on-the-job training, mentoring and relevant professional qualifications where appropriate.

Things to consider

Applicants should also be aware of some of the key demands of the role:

This is an office-based position and involves extended periods working at a computer and on the telephone.

The role involves regular calls to existing and potential customers, including chasing quotations and following up feedback. Full training and support will be given, but candidates should be comfortable speaking to people they have not met before.

Accuracy is essential, as errors in quotations, bookings or permit applications can cause delays, extra cost and customer complaints.

The Commercial team works to tight deadlines, and enquiries, bookings and permit applications often need handling at the same time.

The role includes routine administrative tasks such as data entry, record keeping and chasing, which require patience, persistence and consistency.

The post holder will handle commercially sensitive information, including pricing and customer details, and must maintain discretion at all times.

Time will be set aside for apprenticeship study, and the post holder will be expected to keep up with coursework and assessments alongside their day-to-day duties.

Helen House is in a rural location, so applicants will need to be able to travel there reliably.

Business systems, including Re-flow and AI tools, continue to develop, so a willingness to learn and adapt to new processes and technology is essential.
