PGCE Course in Nottingham. Classes run at Basford, part-time during the day. This PGCE qualification is designed for people who are already teaching post-14 learners, whether paid or voluntary, in further education colleges, training establishments, special schools, academies, prisons, or young offender institutions. It also suits those who train others as part of their role. The course runs over two years and builds on your existing teaching experience. Modules cover the FE teaching role, learning theories, curriculum, and subject pedagogy.

Who this course is for

This course is designed for anyone who is teaching post-14 learners, paid or voluntary, in a further education (FE) setting, training establishment, special school, academy, prison or young offender institution.

The teaching will build on your experiences, enabling you to put new ideas into practice. The course is also suitable for those who are trainers as part of their role.

You will study at our Basford campus, however this may change to an alternative campus.

Entry requirements

You must have:

A Level 2 English and maths (English and Mathematics Level 2 equivalency qualifications will be accepted if recognised by the Society for Education and Training's QTLS eligibility.) A Level 3 qualification in the subject you will be teaching. An Honours Degree at minimum 2:2. At least 75 hours teaching per year, external applicants must have their teaching at Nottingham College. A subject specialist mentor Photo ID A copy of your DBS

What you will learn

  • You'll explore the further education teaching role and what it involves in practice.
  • You'll study learning theories and apply them to your own teaching.
  • You'll examine curriculum design and how it shapes learner experience.
  • You'll develop your subject pedagogy through a specialist pathway.
  • You'll reflect on your professional practice through two assessed practice modules.
  • You'll engage with a range of teaching strategies including workshops, presentations, and blended learning.

How you will learn

You'll learn through a mix of practical teaching experience, workshops, presentations, and one-to-one and group sessions. Blended learning is also part of the programme. Classes run on Thursday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm at the Basford campus, though the campus may change. Your existing teaching role forms a core part of your learning throughout the course.

What you will need to bring

You'll need to bring photo ID and a copy of your DBS certificate when you start. You'll also need a subject specialist mentor in place and evidence of at least 75 hours of teaching per year. Basford will confirm anything else you need before your start date.
