About this course

Level 5 The Early Years Senior Practitioner Course. Study online at your own pace with AKG Learning. The course covers advanced practice working with babies and young children from birth to 5 years, preparing you for senior roles in early years settings. It typically takes 18 months to complete. If you don't already hold GCSE maths and English at grade 4 or above, you'll work toward Functional Skills Level 2 alongside the course, as this is a requirement for Level 3 early years staff.

Who this course is for

This course is for anyone aged 16+ who is working or would like to work with babies and young children from birth to 5 years. It will prepare you to enter employment or you could use it as a stepping stone to higher education courses. Working with young children is challenging and requires sensitivity, patience and the ability to work well with others.

Entry requirements

You must be at least 16 years old. If you don't already hold GCSE maths and English qualifications at grade 4 (C) or above you will work towards the equivalent Functional Skills Level 2 qualification during the course as this is a requirement for Level 3 Early Years staff.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop advanced knowledge of child development from birth to 5 years.
  • You'll learn how to lead and support other practitioners in an early years setting.
  • You'll understand how to plan and deliver high-quality learning experiences for young children.
  • You'll explore safeguarding responsibilities and how to keep children safe.
  • You'll study how to work in partnership with parents, carers, and other professionals.
  • You'll build knowledge of special educational needs and inclusive practice.
  • You'll learn how to observe, assess, and track children's progress effectively.

How you will learn

You'll study online, working through course materials at a pace that suits you. Assessment is through written assignments and portfolio evidence that you build up over the 18 months. You'll document your knowledge and practice throughout the course. If you need to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in maths or English, this runs alongside your main qualification.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. AKG Learning will confirm anything else you need before you start.
