About this course

Level 3 Education and Training Course in Chippenham. Classes run at Wiltshire College & University Centre Chippenham Campus, with a mix of online study and time at the centre. This is an introductory education and training qualification for people who are skilled in a work-related area and want to start teaching or training others. You need to be 19 or over, with a Level 3 qualification or relevant experience in the subject you want to teach. The course runs over 12 months on a flexible, daytime basis.

Who this course is for

This is an introductory course for people who are skilled and qualified in a work related area and want to learn to teach or train others. Known as a 'Gateway' course, it won't equip you to be a fully qualified teacher or trainer, but it is the first step to accessing higher level courses that will do so.

Entry requirements

You need to be 19 years or over. You should have achieved or be aiming to achieve a qualification at NVQ level 3 and/or have experience in the subject/skill you wish to teach.

What you will learn

  • You'll explore the roles and responsibilities of a teacher or trainer in education and training settings.
  • You'll understand how to plan and deliver inclusive teaching sessions.
  • You'll learn how to assess learners and give constructive feedback.
  • You'll develop an understanding of different learning approaches and how to adapt to them.
  • You'll practise microteaching, delivering short sessions to your peers.
  • You'll reflect on your own teaching practice and identify areas for development.

How you will learn

Learning is blended, combining online study with attendance at the Chippenham Campus during the day. You'll complete written assignments and take part in observed microteaching sessions. Assessment is through coursework and practical teaching observations rather than exams. The flexible study pattern lets you fit learning around existing work or commitments.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Wiltshire College & University Centre Chippenham Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Adult educator, teaching a subject or skill in further education or community settings
  • Workplace trainer, delivering training to colleagues or new staff
  • Vocational assessor, supporting learners working toward qualifications
  • Skills coach, helping adults develop work-related knowledge
  • Community learning tutor, running courses for local adult learners

What you could study next

This Award is a gateway course, not a full teaching qualification. To progress toward qualified teacher status, you could study the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, then the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. If you plan to teach in further education, the Level 5 Diploma is the qualification recognised for that role. Some providers also offer subject-specific teaching qualifications at Level 4 and above.
