About this course

Level 3 Education and Training Course in Edinburgh. Classes run at Dreghorn Barracks, blending online study with daytime sessions at the centre. This is an introductory course for people who are skilled or qualified in a work-related area and want to start teaching or training others. It is the first step toward higher-level teaching qualifications, not a standalone teaching licence. You need to be 19 or over and hold or be working toward a Level 3 qualification in your subject area. The course runs over 12 months.

Who this course is for

This is an introductory course for people who are skilled and qualified in a work related area and want to learn to teach or train others. Known as a 'Gateway' course, it won't equip you to be a fully qualified teacher or trainer, but it is the first step to accessing higher level courses that will do so.

Entry requirements

You need to be 19 years or over. You should have achieved or be aiming to achieve a qualification at NVQ level 3 and/or have experience in the subject/skill you wish to teach.

What you will learn

  • You'll explore the roles and responsibilities of a teacher or trainer in education and training settings.
  • You'll understand how to plan and deliver inclusive teaching sessions.
  • You'll learn how to assess learners and give constructive feedback.
  • You'll develop awareness of the key legislation and professional standards that apply to teaching.
  • You'll practise communication and presentation skills for a teaching context.
  • You'll reflect on your own teaching practice and identify areas for development.

How you will learn

The course is delivered through a blend of online study and daytime sessions at Dreghorn Barracks. You'll complete written assignments and reflective tasks, and take part in observed teaching practice. Assessment is through coursework rather than formal exams. Online elements let you study at times that suit you, while centre sessions give you the chance to practise and get feedback in person.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Dreghorn Barracks will confirm anything else you need before you start.

What you could study next

From there, the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is the qualification recognised for teaching in further education colleges. If you want to teach in schools, a PGCE or School Direct route would be the next step to explore.
