Level 3 Dog Grooming Course in Ilkeston. Classes run at Derby College Broomfield Hall Campus, part-time during the day, over 31 weeks. To join, you'll need a Level 2 City and Guilds Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants at Merit grade in both practical and theory exams, plus a current work placement or volunteering in a salon for at least one day a week. This level 3 dog grooming qualification covers breed standard trims, handstripping, canine health and anatomy, legislation, and salon management. Classes are small, with just four students, and take place in an on-site commercial salon.

Who this course is for

This course is a fantastic opportunity for learners, who have already achieved their Level 2 City and Guilds Dog Grooming Assistant qualification, to become a fully qualified dog groomer. This allows you to work within a salon as a professional stylist, a salon manager or even run your own salon. Completed in a commercial salon, within a small personal class of 4 students, creating a more personalised experience. Both theory and practical sessions will be held onsite with the lecturer.

Entry requirements

Maths and English grades D/3 or above.Level 2 City and Guilds Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants (7763-02 or 7863-02) at grade MERIT for Practical AND Theory exams.Must have a current work placement or volunteer in a salon, for a minimum of 1 day a week.

  • You'll complete breed standard trims for breeds such as Cocker Spaniels and Schnauzers.
  • You'll handstrip coats effectively and correctly.
  • You'll apply relevant legislation to professional grooming practice.
  • You'll understand canine health and anatomy.
  • You'll learn the requirements of owning and running a grooming salon.
  • You'll practise canine first aid.

How you will learn

You'll have both practical assessments and a written exam. Practical assessments take place in the dog grooming salon on site and are assessed by your lecturer. The written exam is sat on a date set by City and Guilds. Theory and practical sessions are both delivered on site.
